Run for office in LA County as a Green

Will you run for office as a Green in Los Angeles County?

In Los Angeles County, dozens of cities will have municipal elections in 2023 and 2024. In 2024 there are also elections for state and federal office.  See the official maps for  - State Assembly, State Senate and U.S. House of Representatives that are located all or in part in Los Angeles County.  You can find your districts here.

Such local elections are officially non-partisan, meaning there is no party label next to a candidate's name on the ballot. When Greens run in local elections, they can win. Currently over 25 Greens hold elected local office in California. Since the GPCA's founding in 1990, over 430 California Greens have been elected to local office.  

Running for State and Federal office 

Step #1: Make sure you meet the deadline for filing for office

List of filing deadlines to run for state and federal office.  The official list is not yet available, so refer to this archived list from 2020, which also applied to elections in a presidential year with March primaries.

Step #2: Assess your skills and experience

What office best suits you, your skills, experience and interests? What does the Green Party of California platform and the Green Party of the United States platform have to say about the issues you would be running on?

Step #3: Talk to your friends, colleagues and local Green Party leaders

To run a successful campaign, it helps to have a record of prior involvement in the community, as well as the support of friends and family, Greens and others active in politics. Seek advice from other Greens in your area who have run for office. Get input and seek support from local Green Party leaders.  

Step #4: Select your district

In 2024 and 2026 there are be elections for State Assembly, State Senate and Congressional districts that are located all or in part in Los Angeles County. You can find your district here by putting in your address.
